Here was a fun project. Our customer had a custom hilt made by Christian Fletcher that he wanted us to make a new blade for. From time to time we receive requests for bare blade projects and in a lot of respects this was the same kind of situation. However in this case we were able to shape the blade to the fit perfectly with the hilt. The top left picture shows the original blade that was on the hilt. The white blade above it is the template that Mark used to create the blade. As you can see the new design is longer and has some subtle differences then the pervious blade. The blade for this project was thicker then our stock steel which required us to special order. One of the bigger challenges on this piece was keeping the blade straight. With the blade being so long and narrow there was a tendency for it to want to warp and saber which was the case when it came back from heat treating. It was a matter of warming the blade back up as to not over stress the blade as the warp or saber is removed from the blade. Matt Grzybowski |
