With all of the historic work we’ve had in house as of late it was a nice break in the workflow to have a contemporary piece to work on as well. This piece in particular was had some interesting challenges to it. The top four pictures are some of the in progress shots of its construction. Once I had the blade shaped and rough ground, I was able to work on getting the large brass guard and handle roughed into place. This helps me keep work moving on the piece while the blade is out for heat-treating. The brass ricasso was rough cut to remove the large sections of scrap and then finished with a jeweler’s saw for the delicate detail around the center detail. Both ricassos were then soldiered together. The blue on the brass and guard was achieved by blue enamel. Overall I’m very pleased with how this piece turned out and look forward to working with Frank again on other projects. Mark Grzybowski |
